Jules Leleu Dining Room Table & Chairs 1937 Paris Exhibition

Item #2214 SOLD

JULES LELEU, creator of this spectacular Art Deco dining room table and chairs, was one of the most important and prolific names in furnishings of this period.  What gives this particular table and chairs even more significance  is the fact that they were exhibited in the 1937 Paris Exhibition, a World’s Fair that  educated and influenced the style that we now call “Art Deco”. During the 20th Century, these international  fairs helped to showcase the most influential designers and  styles, while they introduced new technology and new directions. People came from  all over the world to view these exhibits, many of which were judged in competitions and offered the designers continued opportunities for major commissions to utilize their artistry and resources.

Jules Leleu (France, 1883-1961)

A designer and ensemblier, Jules Leleu was one of the key authors of the Art Deco movement. While he did not win the fame of such contemporaries as Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Jean-Michel Frank, Leleu had a longer career and was easily their peer in the conception of trim, refined furniture forms and in the use of the opulent materials — from lacquer and ivory to sharkskin and exotic woods — that were a keynote of haute Art Deco design.

Leleu was born into a family of artisans and decorators. Their firm, Maison Leleu, had existed since the 18th century and Jules would guide it through much of the 20t century  (the business lasted until 1973)!
